COLUMBUS—Libertarian candidate for Ohio attorney general Steven R. Linnabary filed his petition with the secretary of state Tuesday morning to qualify for the 2014 election, days before a possible federal court decision on SB 193—known as the John Kasich Re-election Protection Act—a law signed by the Ohio Republican governor banning so-called minor parties and candidates from next year’s ballot.
Linnabary, a civil engineer and political activist from Columbus, presented about 1,000 signatures from registered Libertarians and unaffiliated Ohio voters—twice the amount required by current Ohio election law to ensure a place on the May 5 primary ballot.
“I’m glad we live in a state with free elections, and I’m looking forward to a decision from the court on SB 193 that affirms every Ohioans right to participate in the political process outside the Republican and Democrat parties,” said Linnabary. “I’m excited about giving Ohioans the opportunity to vote for a candidate who respects their Constitutional rights and civil liberties.”
LPO Political Director Bob Bridges said the party’s four other declared candidates for statewide office—led by governor candidate Charlie Earl—will file their petitions by the February 5 deadline. About 50 Libertarians for Congress, the statehouse, and local offices will be on the 2014 ballot, several of whom have already filed their petitions, Bridges said.
According to LPO attorneys, the judge considering the party’s legal challenge to SB 193 has indicated he could issue a ruling in early January, Bridges said.
Linnabary also thanked the dozens of Libertarian volunteers across the state who helped him complete the arduous task of petitioning. “We couldn’t have done it without everyone who stepped up to help the Libertarian Party of Ohio get our candidates on the ballot so voters can have an actual choice in the voting booth in 2014,” Linnabary said.
Linnabary’s campaign will emphasize jury nullification, which is the right of each citizen juror to refuse to convict a fellow citizen if the juror deems the law unconstitutional or otherwise unjust.
The Libertarian Party of Ohio is the state’s third-largest political party and the only one dedicated to the principles of smaller government, lower taxes and more personal liberty for every individual. The LPO has won three federal court cases dealing with ballot access since 2006, and it had more than 20 candidates on the ballot for U.S. Congress, the statehouse, and county offices on Election Day 2012, when nearly 50,000 Ohio voters chose Libertarian Presidential Candidate Gary Johnson.

By the way, I also appreciate you joining me in not taking the travel reimbursement money for the cancelled Libertarian National Committee meeting, and this is another reason people might want to consider donating to your campaign.
[As an LNC alternate who incurred expenses traveling to Dallas only to learn the meeting had been postponed due to weather, Steve is eligible to be reimbursed at least $100 iirc — I don’t recall the amount in his case off hand — but said that like me he would not be taking the money but would instead donate it to the party (both of us I think have concerns about the propriety of there being an official LP appeal to raise money for this particular purpose, or worse now, up to $1000 in member money being used)].
I encourage you Steve to send in your receipts for that ASAP however, so that the funds for which you are eligible will go toward something to advance the cause (you mentioned ballot access) rather than just compensating other LNC members for travel with our members’ money.

I know that a lot of states don’t require a JD or bar membership to run for AG, and I would think Steve and LPOH would have researched that prior to gathering a thousand signatures in the cold.
I wasn’t aware that Steve Linnabary is a lawyer. Does Ohio state law allow non-lawyer candidates to run for attorney general?
If so, good on those who wrote it that way. Special titles or credentials should not be required to run for public office. I believe this was the intention of the original 13th Amendment to the Constitution — see http://www.let.rug.nl/usa/essays/general/the-missing-13th-amendment/ .

YES! I’ve been saying for years that Libertarians should put more of a focus on promoting jury nullification. This is one of the most powerful messages that Libertarians can spread, because it disseminating knowledge about the right of jurors to nullify laws will lead to less people getting prosecuted for victimless crimes, and this is something that can happen regardless of whether or not Libertarians get elected to office. Jury nullification should be one of the top issues for the Libertarian Party.
