Arizona has never elected an independent candidate to statewide office, to Congress, or to the state legislature, in all the years since it has been a state. But on November 4, an independent candidate for Justice of the Peace (a partisan office) was elected in Seligman. See this story.

Dominick Sarno, 43, won the Seligman Justice of the Peace race handily, with 204 votes to GOP candidate Wade Simon’s 163 and Democrats Marcus Jacobson’s 110, with 100 percent of precincts reporting.
Sarno was jubilant Tuesday night.
“It’s a predominantly a Republican area up here, but I feel my service to the community made a difference,” Sarno said.
He said that service has included work as a firefighter and emergency medical technician as well as time spent on health clinics.
The lead in to this story really sets one up for a big deal and when you read it is only a JP race it is a bit of a letdown.
