After sorting through over 200 images submitted to the Libertarian Party new logo contest, the above are the remaining finalists picked at the most recent LNC in-person meeting in Phoenix last month.
The LNC will hold an electronic meeting to pick the winner at 9 pm eastern on Sunday May 3, 2015.
For anyone interested in contacting LNC members regarding the logo selection or other matters, a listing of LNC members and the contact information they have chosen to make public can be found at http://www.lp.org/lnc-leadership.

Not sure why your comment was in spam but I caught it.
>>>Why should it be necessary for every LNC to take action on the fuck-silly idea of flushing 45 years of branding down the toilet and starting over?>>>
THAT
LOL. Well, that one did have the most support, but not enough to hold off a runoff.
Nick,
I fail to understand why it was a bad thing that past LNCs failed to do something that didn’t need to be done and still doesn’t need to be done.
The current logo is good. It wasn’t necessary, but it was OK. The logo before that was fine, too. Why should it be necessary for every LNC to take action on the fuck-silly idea of flushing 45 years of branding down the toilet and starting over?

First draft of the minutes from the electronic meeting
I still don’t understand why anybody would pick 4 over 7, but so be it.
I just hope they don’t seriously settle on the banana-bird-on-a-stick.
If I understood correctly everything except 1, 4 and 8 was eliminated. There will be a fundraising letter asking the membership for input, then the LNC will make the final decision at the LNC meeting in July in Virginia.
The teleconference was tonight.
As a general comment, yellow on white prints poorly, even with a reasonably good printer (I have a Xerox Phaser 8560); copper eyeliner on the outline (say, dark copper green) might help. Your mileage may vary.
@Nicholas Sarwark – there are issues with adopting the eagle as the logo. Mainly that the eagle is already the logo of the Constitution Party and the Reform Party. The LP needs it’s own identity. If anything other than the Statue of Liberty is to be used as the logo, it should be either the Liberty Penguin or a Porcupine (however the red, white & blue variant is copyrighted by someone)
Updating the logo is not the most important thing for the Libertarian Party to do, but that doesn’t mean it’s okay to fail to do it as multiple past LNCs have done.
My preference is for #1. The graphic designer who created it has done an entire design package, including various print, embroidery, typographic, and other treatments. That said, I’m always interested in what party members and the rest of the committee think.
This is just so likely to have a positive effect on advancing our Libertarian Party. On the bright side, while the LNC is doing this it is not getting into any mischief, like debating if former LNC At-Large Representative Starchild was required to be addressed as “Mister Starchild” over his objections, expelling Angela Keaton from the National Committee, funding in some part an attack on our Oregon affiliate, buying a massively over-expensive building, recruiting several Republicans as our Presidential candidates, et tedious cetera.
If Libertarians pick the Taco Bell symbol as their new party logo, and Taco Bell sues, would Taco Bell have a good legal and or moral case?
I thought ‘The Party of Principle’ was the official…. motto? Slogan? Tagline? Subtitle? Whatever it is, I’m pretty sure it is official.
¡Yo quiero Taco Bell!
If that’s the case, we should make it official then.
Isn’t Minimum Government, Maximum Freedom the current (unofficial?) motto?
How did 9 make it this far? Its not a logo. Maybe its a cool picture. Definitely not a logo though.
IMO however, the logo of #1 ought to be the official motto of the LP,
I think that this is a rather trivial issue for the LP to spend time on considering the dismal state that the party is in when it comes to number of dues paying members and fundraising. The party logo will make little difference in fixing these problems.
I like #6 and the redesigned #8. IMO, #2 should be altered so the “flower petals” are pointy and look like actual flames.
The LP should only adopt #1 if they make the Eagle the official party mascot/animal.
Then again, why not adopt the red-white-blue porcupine variant symbol of the FSP?
I agree with Mark Axinn, especially 4-Right.
Don’t like any of them.
I like the first one.
4.
Agreed with Tom Knapp and NewFederalist. In addition, the finalists, over all, are disappointing. We have a bunch of bananas, something that would be confused with the Lion’s club logo, and some boring alternatives.
In the interest of full disclosure, I submitted one myself, and I was not really all that happy with my own design either, but I wanted to submit something after I saw the Lion’s club logo knock off…. Anyway, given the choices, I am not sure why we would change the logo in the first place, maybe concentrate on something meaningful instead.
Sincerely,
Steve Scheetz
“I still don’t get the need for considering a new logo at all.” – Tom Knapp
I agree. With everything else the Nat Comm has to consider this seems fairly unimportant.
I would like to see the statue of liberty but done up with visibly more of the facial features of an afro american woman or a hispanic american woman or even an asian american woman.
the argument for this is that… the libertarian party is seen as a party of white males… while we argue that the freedoms returned to us benefit all..
So make our symbol represent whom we think our ideas should benefit more then just us white guys.
The torch eagle might be mistaken for a phoenix rising from the flames, rather than an eagle.
I agree that the Liberty Bell logo doesn’t look like a Bell at first glance. I had to read that it was a Liberty Bell, and then search for it, and then, finally, I “found” the bell. It’s like one of those optical illusion puzzles — can you find the cat in the ink blot? — rather than a logo.
Unfortunately you would have to sign up as an IPR editor to do that, and to make things worse I can’t even just sign you up even if you want to anymore but have to ask the Redlich brothers to do it. However, if you tag me on what you want to post I can post it here for you.
If I had a vote, I’d vote for 4.
One flaw I see in the current logo is the torch extending beyond the circle. This problem does not exist in 4 since the stars surround the Statue of Liberty in a circle. 4 is simpler and not as busy as the current. Moreover, the revised current with the black background would look odd on white paper. It would waste black ink and does not provide a good contrast with the gold circle and blue statue therein.
Still, I still prefer the current over all the new proposals. I find these boring, and as I said, I do not see any of them as an improvement over the current.
As somebody said previously, I’d like to see a variant of the 1996 Statue of Liberty to replace the Statue of Liberty in the current version.
Of the new ones, 7 is the best but I don’t see it as an improvement over 4 or 8.
I’m not a fan of 6 because it has the crown in the torch. Without context, a crown always symbolizes monarchy. 9 should be disqualified outright because it promotes the military-industrial complex and use of force.
#6 is growing on me…
The redone 8 is good, as is the current logo. Any big changes are bad, so 7 and 4 are my next choices. There are no others that I like.
I wish I could post a full-rez image of #6 here. The Lady Liberty’s crown in the torch flame makes a pretty good logo element that isn’t represented well in that aggregate image. How can I post photos here?
I’ve been using #7 for the last (almost) 2 years on our in-house generated graphics at the LP facebook. It’s easily adaptable to a number of uses. But I still predict #8 Rebuild will win the vote. I guess we’ll see. I’d be happy and proud to see any of those logos as my party logo. Except #9, that’s not a logo, that’s a poster. And I heard someone mention that the VPA (Veterans Party of America) was already using that or something similar.
I would choose 8, followed closely by 7. The only other one I really like is 6.
In an ideal world, I’d combine the background from 8 with the statue from 7.
6 is classy, straightforward, professional.
I’m so glad to see that tired old logo that looks like a WNBA logo ready for retirement. I predict the winning vote with be #8 REBUILD because that would make the most people happy. The people who like the old logo can let it evolve, and the people who are sick of it can help it evolve. This has been a desire among many for years, and glad to see it happening – it’s overdue. 🙂
I still don’t get the need for considering a new logo at all.
Normally, “rebranding” is something a company or organization does when things haven’t been going so well and they want a fresh start.
The LP’s 2012 presidential slate got more raw votes than any previous such slate and came in a close second in percentage of votes, on a fraction of the budget of the percentage leader. The word “libertarian” seems to have more traction in American electoral politics now than it ever has before. So why the sudden fever to change up the branding instead of pushing the existing branding?
I prefer 4 & 7
What happened to our cute penguin or the porcupine? Ahhh… animal rights! I get it now!
1 looks like a banana.
4 & 8 (no change) are the best.
Yellow will print poorly unless it is outlined. * lower right will print very poorly, and shows poorly on screen. 4 right in copper green would be better.
#1 is the worst. The eagle has already been used by both the Reform Party and the Constitution Party and even the Republican Party (some time ago).
I like 8 and if a change is to be made I like 6.
I’d go with 7, hands down. Failing that 4 (the old Statue), as the most similar, and after that an updated version of the current logo (8b)
The comparison here isn’t quite apples-to-apples, because 7 is shown with variants, not just the main logo proposal itself, which on its own stands out as the best of the group I think. It looks modern, professional, and it’s reasonably distinct, so we could build a branding campaign around it. But it keeps the central image of the party focused firmly on “Liberty” and keeps our long-standing use of the Statue, which is also important and keeps the continuity.
7 also has the best font choice for the name/website, that can be used by itself on other materials (both “LP.org” and “Libertarian Party” in all caps with selective bolding).
6 or modernized 8 if a change needs to be made.
I’d say keep #8…
If you have to change, then go with #6.
I like the remodelled #8. It’s simple and classy.
I do not care for the “Taco Bell” (#3)
I prefer #4 or #7, both are recognizable & readily available at your local print shop if you decide to buy business cards, etc. Both are are also readily recognizable when placed on the ballot in states that use party logos on their ballots.
The current logo has an old feel to it, as if it was designed in the 1930s or something.
I like 7.
I’m partial to an earlier variant of #8 that used the Statue as depicted in #4. I was never fond of the way Lady Liberty’s face was completely in shadow, as if she was hiding her identity. But otherwise, I’d stick with what we’ve got.
#9’s cute. I like it, but not for the official logo.
#6 and #7 are okay.
#3 is a nice idea, but if you don’t see the negative space of the bell, it’s bizarre looking. If I didn’t know to look for a Liberty Bell, I may not have seen it.
For contrast: The negative space in the “FedEx” logo that forms an arrow doesn’t mess up how the logo looks otherwise if you don’t notice it (which I didn’t for years until someone pointed it out to me)
#1 & #2 are too stylized for me.urthermore #1’s attempt to be both flame and a eagle, is a bit much, and #2 looks like a leftover reject from a florist’s logo contest.
#5… Dead on arrival. All it’s got is lettering, no real graphic element. It also looks like it was from a rejected logo from the 70’s.
4, 7 or 8. Doesn’t really matter which, except that 8 would be easiest since it wouldn’t require a bunch of messing around to change over.
I prefer 7
Not a Libertarian so really doesn’t matter what I think but I have to say I think most of them are pretty good. 3 and 5 are not my favorites and 9 is good but not as the official logo.
