Independence-Alliance Party of Minnesota Meets for Annual Convention, Approves Presidential Candidate Discussions

Members of the Independence-Alliance Party of Minnesota convened in Burnsville over the weekend for their annual state convention, where they endorsed several candidates and approved party leadership to continue discussions about placing a presidential candidate on their ballot line.

The Independence-Alliance Party of Minnesota was first organized in 1992 as the Independence Party by supporters of presidential candidate Ross Perot. It soon gained major party status in 1994 before formally affiliating with the National Reform Party two years later and operating under the name of the Reform Party of Minnesota. Factionalism in the Reform Party led the Minnesota affiliate to revert to its original name and focus in 2000, where it regularly competed as a major third party force in Minnesota politics for several years. In 2019, the party merged with the Alliance Party, as well as several other third parties, resulting in its current name.

Meeting at the Burnhaven Public Library on Saturday, May 11, delegates to the convention heard from candidates running for county and state offices and made formal endorsements of their candidacies. According to information shared by the Independence-Alliance Party over social media, members endorsed four candidates, including Bob Hopkins for Olmstead County Commissioner, Heidi Heino and Creedence Petroff for the Minnesota state legislature, and Joyce Lacey for the United States Senate. Delegates also participated in the annual Donor Appreciation Dinner.

Additionally, members voted to authorize the party’s State Executive Committee to continue discussions with an unnamed presidential candidate to place them on the Minnesota ballot later this year. As of 2024, the party is one of five in the state with ballot access. It previously endorsed Rocky De La Fuente for the presidency in 2020 and Evan McMullin in 2016.

Independent Political Report has reached out to the Independence-Alliance Party for more information on the presidential candidate in question.
