The Reform Party of the United States has come out against an upcoming change to federal student loan rules for nursing students under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, arguing the revision will threaten to make nursing “no longer a career.”
In a November 23 statement, national Reform Party leadership strongly objected to the One Big Beautiful Bill’s reclassification of graduate-level nursing programs. Under the new law, advanced nursing degrees would no longer be listed among federally recognized “professional degrees,” which in turn reduces how much students may borrow beginning with new borrowers in July 2026.
The party is demanding an explanation from Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., whom it previously backed in the 2024 presidential election. The national committee had endorsed Kennedy‘s independent presidential bid around the same time it reorganized its Florida state affiliate, with the objective to place Kennedy on the ballot under its associated state line.
“The Reform Party of the United States backed Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy for President, and still supported him after he traded the nomination for an appointment as Secretary of Health and Human Services,” the statement read. “The Reform Party demands that Secretary Kennedy calls Chairman Hensley tomorrow, and explain how he let this happen on his watch.”
After Kennedy later withdrew from the race and made his own endorsement of Donald Trump, he requested the Florida Secretary of State’s office have his name removed. Despite that, the national organization continued to back Kennedy going into the general election.
While the Reform Party said it does not typically take positions on social issues, it regarded the student loan changes as a workforce issue, particularly one affecting women. It demanded that Kennedy either explain the rule change to party Chair Nicholas Hensley in what it called “simple terms” or resign from office.
