Businessman JL Mealer withdrew today from the race for the Constitution Party’s presidential nomination, and formally endorsed former Savannah State football coach Robby Wells.
In his message, Mealer attacks CP frontrunner and former U.S. Congressman Virgil Goode, and claims that he himself will one day be President of the United States.
Mealer writes:
I am following up with this email and a letter to simply inform you that due to my discrepancies with national —for whatever reason, perhaps I struck a wrong chord last year when I announced my campaign[?] and the “Catch-22” Rule that will not allow states to back me without national recognizing me first… Which they refuse to do– as of last night’s debate I have suspended my campaign with the Constitution Party until a reasonable man can take control of the helm on April 22nd as the new National Chairman.
I have thrown my full support behind Robby Wells.
You know where I stand on corruption and bribery and fraud. That being said, I stand with the LAW and the Constitution and I urge Mr. Goode to drop out of the race and cut his ties with the Constitution Party.
Addressing Mr. Goode:
Sir, whether your Congressional voting record is correctly registered or not and your ties to defense contractors and donation records properly recorded by the FEC and on record as well, THE STIGMA ATTACHED TO YOU ALONE with past ‘pay-for-play’ (votes) will ruin this party. It is in the best interest of the Constitution Party and for America if you drop out of this CP nomination and save face for yourself and the thousands, hopefully millions who have already and who will back the CP candidate in November.It only makes sense. Sometimes past mistakes and transgressions of the magnitude of yours cannot be forgiven nor forgotten. Sadly, your votes and indiscretions by manipulating defense budgets and appropriations, whether intentional or not, are beyond reproach.
This nation is on it’s last legs as a free nation and we need leadership with clear cut goals and no baggage that can be used against him while the mess is cleaned of the corruption. I suggest we get behind Robby Wells as I have done and make this a win for America and the Constitution Party.
I will be President in 2016-2020… So let’s not give me anything more to have to deal with when I clean house.

This isn’t going to hurt Goode’s chances at all. For one, Janine Hansen and my state’s delegation will be solidly backing Virgil at the convention.
Another serious factor to consider that will give Goode the CP’s nod is that he has been a member of the CP for quite some time and has spoken many, many times at Constitution Party meetings and events while Wells was involved with the Reform Party not to long ago and only recently joined the CP, which gives an impression to me and others of a ‘johnny-come-lately wannabe political opportunist’, unlike Virgil.
Goode isn’t perfect, but he has better name recognition, funding, and has been active in the CP for quite awhile, unlike Robby.

Honestly there is something to what is said about Wells performing better than Goode in the Debate. I know Wells has a tough go of it, but he does have a nice plan along the lines of a certain Ron Paul.
Looks like there are over 2M voters out there who like Ron Paul. They will be up for grabs shortly. The Q is will Goode’s message or Wells’ message attract more of them. Who can help more on ballot access , etc. ? The one who draws more of the Paul support I suspect.

Thanks Rob. I wish I had that much influence. The problem is that I don’t sense the kind of grassroots revolt against Goode that there was against Keyes. Keyes brought with him a whole system of ideological baggage. Goode doesn’t have that. He just has a mixed record as all elected politicians would.

I suspect Mr. Hill is correct here. The CP leadership seems to like Congressman Goode a good deal more than they did Amb. Keyes. Perhaps Coach Wells could be counting on Mr. Phillips to have his say? It helped Rev. Baldwin last time out. There are much worse combos for the CP than a Goode-Wells ticket.
First ballot–over 50% goes to Goode, easily. I’m guessing Wells won’t even claim 40%.

The convention starts next wed. April 18th and runs through the 21st.
Not sure if it will be decided on first ballot or not. We should be able to tell by thursday night if it will be close or not.

I would consider being out performed by a non-politician in a debate a stumble for Goode, after all how long has been a politician and an elected official. Having a fmr Football coach w/ no political experience outshine you in a debate isn’t a good thing for Goode, lol.
How many followers did Mr. Mealer have within the Party and will they follow his lead to support Robby Wells?

I think Goode will stumble a bit more and ultimately, will lose to Wells. Consistance and purity is important in the Constitution Party, and Wells represents both.
Mealer is an egomaniac. I cannot see how his endorsement can help.

No, not just an endorsement. I said recently, as in “recent events”.
He had a strong showing at the debate, and now an endorsement from a dropout. Wells’ campaign is gaining good momentium. I don’t know that he will win, but he now has a chance.
The idea that the CP would ditch Goode and choose Wells is the name of purity would strike me as one of the most laughable things imaginable. I have trouble believing they would be that stupid.

I think otherwise.
Goode has some baggage, just like anyone who’s held office for as long as him. So, good on Mealer for calling him out on it. Robby Wells is a much better speaker, and 100% inline w/ the CP platform.
It looks like Wells might end up as the CP nominee after all. Until recently I counted him out.
He seemed like trouble to me so this is probably a good (no pun intended) thing.
