The likely gubernatorial candidate for the state’s Green Party, Howie Hawkins, is criticizing Gov. Andrew Cuomo for comments made in an op-ed piece published last week.
Writing in the Huffington Post, the governor, as Hawkins puts it, admitted defeat on comprehensive campaign finance reform when he wrote “We may not be able to shut off the spigot of money into the system.”
In a statement the Green Party standard bearer in the 2010 gubernatorial election said Cuomo should “be calling for full public campaign financings and an amendment to the U.S. constitution to permit effective public regulation of election financing.”
Hawkins added the sitting governor should be supporting the Clean Money Elections bill (S.4501/A.4116) that would dole out a fixed amount of campaign funds equal to the total sum of small contributions raised by a candidate. The entire Legislature, state attorney general, state comptroller and district attorneys would be subject to the legislation.
